Routine

I recently made the switch to full time contracting. I've been doing so since January this year. I decided, when I started, to try some experiments with my routine, and as I need something to fill out my 200 words, here's a 99 day retrospective on one of them.

Same two meals every week.

I work 4 days a week in the office and Fridays from home. During the commuting week I eat the same two meals for lunch and tea. I make a double size meal each evening, eat half for tea and bring half into work the next day. I've been doing this for 14 weeks now and it's working out great.

I'm pretty much the opposite of a foody so the repetition doesn't bother me. If I ate the same meal every day it might, but the two day split is enough of a change.

The main upsides of this are:
1. Nutrition goals. Always eating the same thing makes it super easy to be consistent on the only two nutrition targets that matter (may elaborate in a future article); average daily calories and average daily protein. I only have to worry about tracking calories and protein on 3 days of the week.
2. Simple food shop. I do a food shop on Thursdays and Sundays, the Sunday shop is super efficient as I know what I'm buying. Inefficient shopping is a pet peeve.
3. Planning evenings. My commute is pretty brutal (~2hour each way) so having a, rough, evening schedule is important. Cooking the same meal means cooking times are consistent and any improvements to cooking efficiency compound.
4. Saving money. I'm never tempted to go out for lunch at work as I always have food with me.

Conclusion:
This experiment seems to be working well. The trade-off of losing 10 minutes eating tastier food is massively offset by the life improvements gained. I've actually been expanding this idea and for the past 2 months have a set meal routine for Thursday and Friday too.
